Camille A. Brown & Dancers' Every Body Move community engagement activities celebrate the legacy and rich contributions of African American and African diaspora dance forms as respected and equal to European-based movement and music traditions. Every Body Move (EBM) programs and curricula use African diaspora social dance as a catalyst to uplift Black and Brown people and their stories. Our EBM student and participant-centered pedagogy fosters creativity and self-expression, instills pride in the heritage of Black and Brown aesthetic culture, promotes body positivity, teamwork, and nurtures community and leadership. Our program develops the creative potential of those with little access to the arts— demystifying the creative process by providing movement-generating tools and devices that help program participants build their creative and improvisation skills as they collaborate with peers on the creation of a new work.
EBM curricula meet the NY State Learning standards for K-12 grades in the areas of social/emotional learning, physical development, health and cognition, knowledge of the world of dance and multicultural pedagogy, and tie into K-12 strands of learning in social studies and history.
THE EBM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (EBM-PD) is designed for BIPOC teaching artists, community facilitators, and arts and education administrators. The EBM-PD program will: 1) share our curricula frameworks and student-centered teaching philosophy, which validates movement in student bodies rather than superimposing Eurocentric movement onto them; 2) provide supportive practicums; 3) present expert talks on African diaspora social dance and model social dance classes, and 4) present discussions with social workers and wellness professionals.
EBM-PD program is offered as both a Certificate Program and a Licensing Program. Participants should have the ability to teach one or more social dance forms, and have experience teaching dance in a classroom or community setting. Those wishing to be licensed as an EBM teaching artist/community facilitator should have 3 to 5 years of classroom or community-based teaching experience.
